Melissa officinalis L.

Lemon Balm

Lemon Balm

Traditionally lemon balm has been used in treatment of nervous complaints including declining mental function, languishing and melancholy. Spirits of balm "Melissengeist" are a hugely popular traditional German remedy for nervous headache and neuralgic affections. However only a little traditional use appears to be supported by modern clinical research. Clinical studies have shown efficacy in treatment of nervous disorders including dementia and Alzhemier’s disease. Sedative and hypnotic activity has been shown in animal studies, and antiviral activity has been seen in vitro. Topical use has been shown to be effective in treatment of Herpes simplex infections. Lemon balm appears to be well-tolerated by most people with few side-effects.
